13 killed, 4 injured after van collides with lorry in Karnataka's Haveri
HAVERI: At least thirteen people, including two children, were killed in a horrific accident in Haveri district in the early hours of Friday when a tempo traveler rammed into a lorry from behind on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway-48. The tragic accident occurred near Gundenahalli cross in Byadagi taluk of Haveri district around 3.30am while the victims were returning to their native places.

The deceased have been identified as Parusharam, 45, Bhagya, 40, Nagesh, 50, Vishalakshamma, 40, Subhadrabai, 65, Punnya, 50, Manjulabai, 62, Adarsh, 23, Manasa, 24, Roopa, 40, Manjula, 50, and a four-year-old and a six-year-old boy whose names have not yet been released. All had gone to Chincholli to offer pooja to the Mayamma goddess and to bless the tempo traveler, which the family had recently purchased second-hand. The incident occurred while they were returning.
“A total of 17 passengers, including the driver Adarsh, 23, were traveling in the MUV (multi-usage vehicle), and they were returning from Chincholli in Belagavi district. The victim’s vehicle collided with a lorry loaded with sugar. At least 13 passengers who were traveling in the MUV died, with 11 killed on the spot and two later in the hospital, out of the 17,” shared SP Anshu Kumar Srivastava.
He further said that the victims Vishalakshamma, Adarsh, Nagesh, Bhagya, Manasa, and Subhadrabai were from Yemmihatti village of Bhadravati taluk in Shivamogga district. Parashuram and Roopa, a husband and wife, were residents of Halkol in Shivamogga, while Manjulabai and Manjula were from Kalyal circle of Bhadravati taluk. Punyabai was a resident of Machenahalli in Bhadravati taluk. “The bodies were trapped in the mangled remains because the vehicle hit with high speed. Four have sustained injuries, and two of them are in serious condition,” the SP added.
