Tamil Nadu assembly passes one more resolution against NEET
Chief minister M K Stalin moved the resolution.
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu assembly on Friday passed a resolution urging the Union govt to exempt the state from National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and allow it to admit students to medical colleges based on the results of the Class XII board exams as it had been done before NEET came into effect.
Chief minister M K Stalin moved the resolution which said, "NEET should be abolished.
Tamil Nadu should be allowed to admit students to medical courses based on the marks in the Class XII examination. Taking into account the irregularities in several states and opposition to the test, the Centre should appropriately amend the National Medical Commission Act to totally scrap NEET,"
Stalin said NEET had made medical education inaccessible to rural and poor students.
He said DMK had been continuously demanding the abolition of NEET since it came into effect in the year 2017. The malpractices, cheating and scams connected to the recently declared results of the NEET had made students lose faith in the examination, the CM said.
He said West Bengal chief minister Mamata Bannerjee, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav had opposed NEET and demanded that the Union government scrap the examination.
DMK allies Congress, CPI, CPM, VCK and others supported the resolution. BJP members walked out. On Wednesday, AIADMK members were suspended from the assembly for the rest of the session which ends on Saturday.
The assembly had passed resolutions against NEET in the past too. In 2021, the assembly passed a bill seeking to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET.
