“We had housing needs that were not being met, and it was tragic that the tornadoes caused all the damage,” Mayfield City Councilman John Poole. “Many people are getting homes at very low costs that they could have never afforded before.”

Devin Johnson’s life has been uprooted for a second time by a tornado in Kentucky. A twister flattened his home in the Barnsley community over the Memorial Day weekend. It was on the same lot where another tornado struck, leaving him homeless in 2021. Johnson said Tuesday that he never thought it could happen twice. He watched Tuesday as workers cut into the wreckage of the trailer he called home with his grandparents and girlfriend. It’s an all-too-familiar scene for his family. As they start over again, there’s one thing they’ve decided on. He says they’re moving away from Barnsley.

An Associated Press investigation into prison labor in the United States found that prisoners who are hurt or killed on the job are often being denied the rights and protections offered to other American workers. These prisoners are being placed in dangerous jobs, sometimes with little or no training. They pick up trash along busy highways, fight wildfires, and operate heavy machinery. They work on industrial-sized farms and meat-processing plants tied to the supply chains of large, iconic companies, from McDonald’s to Target. But incarcerated workers and their families often have little or no recourse when things go wrong.

Since the December 2021 tornado, volunteers have been coming from all over the country to the city of Mayfield to help with the rebuilding efforts. Soon, volunteers traveling to the area will have a temporary housing option. The Graves County Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG) is building a Volunteer Bunkhouse for volunteers to live in during their time in Mayfield.

The countdown to Christmas is winding down. Many people are rushing around getting ready for holiday parties and adding the final gift under the tree. During the month of December, there have been many food distributions and toys drives, but a Mayfield church received a different gift this year.

As the anniversary of the December 10, 2021, tornado approaches, the city of Mayfield is planning to come together again for a memorial walk to share memories and support. This year's walk is called Memorial Walk: A New Beginning.

The rebuilding process continues in downtown Mayfield after the December 2021 tornado made a path of destruction. The restoration process of traffic signals in the downtown area have been underway since 2022.
