In defence of in-person classes

There’s enough anecdotal evidence of the toll that the absence of physical or in-person classes has taken on students

It’s almost as if shutting things down is fast becoming a panacea for all the ills that plague us; the frequency and felicity with which the term lockdown is being thrown around would seem to suggest that (Getty Images/iStockphoto)

In defence of India’s climate stance

India ended up being unfairly blamed for watering down the language of the climate pact text, by forcing a dilution on coal, from phasing it “out” to phasing it “down”

It is important that developed countries set the narrative right, and not blame the one country that has made a huge leap in its climate commitments (ANI)

An education emergency

There is an urgent need to improve the hybrid model, bridge the digital divide, and, critically, help government schools

In UP, break the cycle of antagonism

Political parties have a choice. They can either contest the upcoming polls on the basis of the past, or they can contest the election on the basis of the future

In Indian democratic politics, parties find it far easier to mobilise large groups of citizens on the basis of existing identity categories; weave coalitions that club together enough social groups to enable a poll win; and craft this coalition in antagonistic terms vis-a-vis other groups. Air pollution: Too little, too late – again

Providence, therefore, is the only determinant for how clean the air we breathe will be, because administrators, policies and politicians — for yet another year — evidently aren’t
