Best materials for beach bags

When picking the perfect beach bag, the fabric can make (or literally) break your bag. The right material can make all the difference in terms of maintenance and style.

Synthetics

Award-winning travel expert Oneika Raymond and blogger Shanel Griffith say nylon, polyester and other synthetics are great materials for beach bags due to their durability.

“These materials are also water resistant and can be cleaned easily if sand gets onto your bags,” Griffith explains.

Florida-based content creator Jami Ray says shoppers should also consider clear PVC or vinyl beach bags because they are waterproof and easy to clean.

“Nylon or mesh bags also make great beach bags due to their lightweight and durable material,” Ray says. “Nylon is water-resistant and dries quickly, while mesh allows sand and water to escape easily, keeping the contents dry and clean.”

Organic materials

If you prefer something more natural, our experts say woven bags like straw or rattan are best because they anticipate the inevitable sand that finds its way into a beach bag.

“Most of my bags are put through the ringer because I’m at the beach or on the boat often enough that anything too delicate just won’t work,” Ray explains. “My favorites are bags that can withstand sand or saltwater and be rinsed off or dipped in the Gulf for a quick clean.”

No matter what style of bag you choose, swimwear designer and content creator Becca Ingle says prioritizing waterproof materials is key for beach days.

Canvas is another classic choice for its durability and sturdiness, and coated canvas can give you a timeless look while being water-resistant.

What to look for in a beach bag

Zippers are the number one feature our experts search for in the best beach bags.

“I love having a zipper to close my bag, as well as an inner compartment or pocket where I can keep smaller items like wallets or keys,” Raymond says.

Shoppers should also prioritize long reinforced straps, inside pockets, and materials that can be easily cleaned. Ingle says compartments for wet bags and wet swimsuits are also ideal.

“I tend to reach for different bags depending on the destination and activities of the day, but you want to make sure your bag is large enough to carry towels, stow coverups, or stash other beach essentials,” Ray says.
