NEW DELHI: A bus carrying 40 Amarnath pilgrims from Hoshiarpur, Punjab, narrowly avoided a major tragedy on National Highway 44 near Nachlana in the Banihal area of Ramban district due to brake failure.
The bus, descending from Baltal, faced brake failure on the steep slopes of the highway. Panic ensued, and some passengers jumped from the moving vehicle in a desperate attempt to save their lives.
The Army and police quickly intervened, using stones to halt the bus.

"It was a frightening moment," said one of the pilgrims. "We thought it was the end, but the Army and police saved us."

Ten people sustained injuries, including six men, three women, and one child. The Army's medical teams provided first aid on site and later transported the injured to a local medical facility in Nachlana for further treatment.
A senior official from the Ministry of Defence, Jammu, lauded the quick actions of the Army and police personnel. "Their prompt and courageous efforts prevented a potential catastrophe," he said. "The situation could have been much worse without their intervention."
